Whenever such a label is displayed, we are prompted to be aware of or to look out for this person. We are prompted to be more cautious and understanding. The important element to consider is what you do with your awareness, particularly around new learners.
Will you give them their space, or engage them?
Will you see them as more or less?
Will you enhance their experience, or take away from it?
Will you commend them and encourage them for not crashing, or honk at them for not making a turn correctly?
Perhaps it is not the student who we need to be aware of, but ourselves. And, really, aren’t we all students in some way?
