“But we’re all professionals here.”
A statement typically expressed by one who is unwilling to acknowledge the off-balance power dynamics, potential lack of safety in the group, and wants to keep it that way. Want to put someone in their place? Call upon (or attack) the person’s spirit of professionalism.
It’s a way of hiding, of course: to protect one’s power and status. The last thing – last thing – that is needed when a team needs to get from point A to B.
We are all professionals, of course. And we achieve, accomplish, overcome, and succeed by way of how we ameliorate and elevate the professional standing of each other, not call it into question or use organizational standing to quash it.
Let others in, and raise them up. Be a professional.
