The distance that we place between our fellow humans and ourselves is unfortunate. Of course you paid the person to shovel your snow, and it is reasonable to expect competent, timely work by way of that obligation and the expectations created by it.
But beyond the transaction you have a person, with air in their lungs and fears as real as yours. With people who care about them and want fantastic things for them.
We all have the same job: to get by. And we all do so differently. What if we replaced expectations with empathy, results with respect? How different would our work and our interactions be?
